How to keep kids warm when they play outside this Winter

How to keep kids warm when they play outside this Winter

Dress infants and children warmly for outdoor activities. Several thin layers will keep them dry and warm.

Avoid cotton clothing because it won't keep the kids very warm. Stick with wool or other fabrics. Waterproof pants and jackets are great top layers because they don't let the wetness seep into the other clothing. And don't forget warm socks and boots to keep feet dry and a hat to top it off.

The rule of thumb for older babies and young children is to dress them in one more layer of clothing than an adult would wear in the same conditions.

Make sure your kids have a snack before going out. The calories will give their bodies energy in the cold weather.

And protect your kids' faces with sunscreen. Even though the idea of a sunburn in January can seem odd, snow can reflect up to 85% of the sun's ultraviolet rays.

Fairview Park School buses relocating

Fairview Park School buses relocating

The Fairview Park School bus fleet is currently stationed at the high school parking lot.

The buses will be relocated to the New Hope parking lot and parked on an angle facing the Parkview School building, away from the homes in the area.

This will also allow the buses to use the north entrance to the church for entering and the south entrance for exiting.

The district is working to have electrical service run from the shed on the southwest corner of the lot for the engine block warmers on the buses for the winter. Trees around the lot will be crowned.

The district hopes to have the buses moved by late fall.

Hero dog, Sarge needs your help!

Hero dog, Sarge needs your help!

Sarge saved his owner's life last February, when her Cleveland home caught on fire. If it weren't for Sarge, she wouldn't have been notified of the fire - or have survived.
Everything in the house was destroyed, including 3 of her 4 cats. The house has since been demolished.

Now, Sarge and his caretaker have been in 4 different homes since then.  The most current situation became desperate 3 weeks ago when the people they were staying with threatened to dump Sarge on the streets.

Lucky Paws Animal Rescue immediately removed Sarge from the home and put him in a boarding kennel. The rescue can not afford to board him any longer, and is desperate for public assistance and funds to keep Sarge safe while his owner finds a safe home for them to live.

Lucky Paws Rescue is in need of funds to help pay for Sarge's care, or a willing and committed foster home to take him in. Sarge is neutered/UTD on shots. Plays well with other dogs. Great with people.

The owner of Sarge is also in desperate need of assistance!!

Fairview Park Annual Tree Lighting ceremony

Fairview Park Annual Tree Lighting ceremony

Please help us ring in the holiday season on Sunday, November 27 from 4:00 to 6:30 PM at the Gemini Center for Fairview Park's Annual Tree Lighting ceremony.

This annual event is hosted by the Fairview Park Kiwanis, who will provide cocoa and snacks to party goers. Planned events include horse-drawn carriage rides, music, entertainment, The Twinkle Shop where youngsters may shop for holiday gifts, and of course, Santa.

Mayor Patton will continue the celebration with the tree lighting at 5:30 PM followed by a traditional sing-a-long. Singing loudly is the only way to let Santa know we are ready for his arrival at 6:00 PM!

The entire event is free and open to the public. However, a donation to the Fairview Park Hunger Center is suggested. Please bring a non-perishable food item, paper or cleaning product. All donations stay in Fairview Park.

West neighborhood friend of the week: Pippa

West neighborhood friend of the week: Pippa

Friend of the Week is a regular feature to introduce furry friends in the community that need loving and caring homes.  Please help these deserving animals find their forever guardians or consider adopting an animal yourself.  NFW West: Available for Adoption

The NFW Challenge 2011:   149 / 150 Adoptions

This week, the Neighborhood Friend of the Week is piping up for Pippa.  This wonderful girl has been through a lot and truly deserves to find her forever, loving home.  She was found as a stray in Avon Lake and is currently in a foster home with kids and three other dogs.  However, Pippa is looking for a home that’s quieter with less commotion and older children.

Pippa is smart and silly and knows lots of tricks.  She will pretty much do anything for a treat, which is probably how she got a little overweight.  Pippa walks incredibly well on a leash and loves to ride in the car.  Pippa will truly be the perfect companion to the right person.  If you adopt Pippa today, she will love you forever and give you plenty of kisses.

To add Pipa to your heart and home, contact Love-A-Stray Rescue in Avon Lake at leannejmazey@yahoo.com or visit their Petfinder website.

Young adults invited to join the Cuyahoga County Next Generation Council

Young adults invited to join the Cuyahoga County Next Generation Council

In recognition of the unique role that young adults play in creating an entrepreneurial economy, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald announced the creation of the Cuyahoga County Next Generation Council.

Composed of county residents ages 20 to 34, the Council will encourage greater participation in government and identify policy issues and priorities that affect young adults across the county. FitzGerald said it is important to Cuyahoga County’s economic future to attract and retain creative, talented young people.

“Cuyahoga County can no longer afford not to engage young adults in local government” FitzGerald said. “Our hope is that this council will help our new county government in developing a policy agenda that will make our region a destination for young people across the world.”

Partners in the development of the Next Generation Council include Engage Cleveland, the 20/30 Club, and the Young Professional Senate.

“The formation of the Next Generation Council is a positive sign for our community and for young adults becoming more collaborative and connected, which is imperative to Greater Cleveland's future success” says Andrew Bennett, President of the Cleveland 20/30 Club.

Some of the goals of the council include improving communication between county government and the young adult community of Cuyahoga County and building coalitions with young adult organizations to increase the influence and effectiveness of young adults in civic issues.

Prospective council members are required to be residents of Cuyahoga County and must submit a resume, cover letter, and essays discussing their leadership experiences. Applications are due on Dec. 19, 2011. An external committee of young adult leaders will oversee the selection process.

Cleveland Gas Prices Down

Cleveland Gas Prices Down

Average retail gasoline prices in Cleveland have fallen 6.6 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.34/g Sunday. This compares with the national average that has fallen 1.1 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.43/g, according to gasoline price website ClevelandGasPrices.com.

Including the change in gas prices in Cleveland during the past week, prices Sunday were 43.0 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and are 6.8 cents per gallon lower than a month ago. The national average has decreased 4.4 cents per gallon during the last month and stands 54.4 cents per gallon higher than this day one year ago.

"Even as crude oil comes close to $100/bbl, retail gasoline prices have held their ground and spot prices for gasoline have given up gains," said Patrick DeHaan, GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst. "We certainly have some shifts going on in the market as diesel production is favored over gasoline, meaning refiners will boost production of distillate at the cost of gasoline production. Diesel and middle distillate demand remains strong while gasoline demand is somewhat weak, causing gasoline to seemingly disconnect from the upward trend of the crude oil and distillate market," DeHaan added.
